My name is Ken Curto and I am the Commander of White Pine Post #3 American Legion in Ely, Nevada.
Every year, without fail, The American Legion and James Jewell VFW Post 3547 decorate the graves of every veteran in the Ely cemetery with a cross and an American Flag to salute their service in the armed forces of the United States of America.
This tradition began years ago and the American Legion is sworn to continue it until we can no longer achieve it.
In addition to our members, we request the assistance of youth groups and volunteers to plant these crosses and flags on every veteran’s grave in the Ely cemetery. The purpose of this news article is to ask for help from the families of those veterans buried in the Ely cemetery. Our membership is limited and not always able to accomplish this task which we do on the Friday before Memorial Day at 8:00 AM. If you have a veteran or family member who served in the armed forces and want them honored as they should be, please consider helping us on Friday, May 24, 2024 at 8:00 AM at the Ely cemetery. We will have veterans who will instruct you on how to plant the crosses and flags and the tools with which to accomplish it.
The American Legion will also sponsor and present the annual Memorial Day program at the war memorial located at the old White Pine County Courthouse on Monday, May 27, 2024 at 11:00 AM.
There will be speeches, music and more with the American Legion, White Pine Community Choir and the Cheat Grass Band participating.
Please consider honoring a veteran by decorating their grave on May 24 this year. I thank you for your time and attention to this heartfelt request for our veterans.
