The Fezziwig Ball: A Fundraising Extravaganza at the Centennial Fine Arts Center
Ely, Saturday, – Hilli-ho the magic of the holiday season at the highly anticipated Fezziwig Ball, a festive event will take place on December 16, from 6:00 PM to 10:00 PM at Ely’s Centennial Fine Arts Center.
What —or who — is a Fezziwig?
In Charles Dickens’ 1843 book, A Christmas Carol. the curmudgeonly Scrooge is taken by the Ghost of Christmas Past to look in on his first employer Mister Fezziwig, while Fezziwig and his employees are celebrating at a Christmas party in the warehouse. Not only Fezziwig’s employees were on hand, but his family and all his neighbors were invited to share in the joy of the season too. No more work tonight! Instead, the holiday was celebrated with great good cheer, and all were made welcome.
Fezziwig was a merry and joyful man, “full of spirit”! Seeing Mister Fezziwig again reminded Scrooge that, like Fezziwig, he should value and care for his employees with humanity and generosity of spirit.
Fezziwig was quite the dancer, the book tells us. “A positive light appeared to issue from Fezziwig’s calves. They shone in every part of the dance like moons. He appeared to wink with his legs.”
The Ghost of Christmas Past reminded Scrooge that “the happiness he gives is quite as great as if it cost a fortune.”
So get ready to step back in time, you Scrooges out there, to the era of Charles Dickens. The Fezziwig Ball promises an unforgettable evening filled with joy, music, dancing, and merriment. Attendees will be treated to the delightful tunes of the five-piece band ElderBlossoms from Salt Lake City, creating a lively atmosphere for all to enjoy.
The event will also feature enchanting Christmas carolers and graceful dancers, adding to the festive ambiance. Guests are encouraged to dress in the spirit of Charles Dickens but this is definitely not required. Come dressed to enjoy the evening.
