For fifty years The Rural Nevada Retired Senior Volunteer Program has been shining example of how seniors can continue to make a meaningful impact in their communities long after retirement. Empowering Seniors, AND Enriching Communities, this volunteer program, part of a nationwide initiative, brings together retired seniors to serve their community through various volunteer opportunities. The RSVP program is dedicated to harnessing the skills, knowledge, and experience of retired seniors to address critical community needs. The program’s mission is to provide seniors with meaningful volunteer opportunities that allow them to stay active, engaged, and connected to their community while making a positive impact. The White Pine Chamber of Commerce takes pride in using the program and its affiliate AARP to provide a senior citizen an employment opportunity working in the Chamber’s Visitor Center.
Some of the services and opportunities available through the program include:
Senior Companionship: Volunteers can provide companionship and assistance to other seniors in the community who may be isolated or in need of support, including through the NEST Collaborative.
Tutoring and Mentoring: Volunteers can help children and young adults in schools and community centers with academic tutoring, mentoring, and other educational support.
Environmental Conservation: Volunteers can participate in local environmental conservation efforts, such as cleaning up parks and waterways or planting trees and gardens.
Healthcare Support: Volunteers can assist healthcare facilities and organizations with various tasks, such as transporting patients, providing administrative support, or assisting with health education programs.
Transportation Program: Volunteers provide escorted door-to-door transportation for frail, home bound, and low-income seniors (60 and older), persons living with a disability (18-59), and veterans, who are no longer able to drive themselves.
Veteran’s Support: Veterans benefits and eligibility, Help with paperwork, Referrals for housing, employment, suicide prevention and awareness, and other issues, Continuing your education and Volunteer opportunities.
The Carson and Rural Elder (CARE) Law Program provides pro bono and low-cost legal services to seniors (aged 60 and older) in the 15 rural counties of Nevada.
