I get a lot of questions about old McGill photos, when there is no date on the photo. So many old photos of McGill and our own family photos are never dated and people/places are not named. It is frustrating at best. I try to be as accurate as possible in my writings, but sometimes it is hard to properly date some photos. Here are some examples of how I do it.
When the EXACT date is not known but there are indications of it, I will set a date and follow it with—circa. This means it is close, but not exact.
Here is an example:
There are newspaper ads for the Leader in 1908 and in February 1910 the new manager, Richard Richards moved his family into living quarters in the store. There are other references about the store in 1916. The McGill Drug store is there. It was changed from Steptoe Drug in 1912. The post office is there. It moved across the street to its present location in 1920. The Campton store was turned in 1925-6. The Clubhouse was finished in 1915.
I would date this photo at 1916, circa. It could be 1917, but no later than 1919.
