I was once the visitor too. Now, Ely is my home. I know you’re wondering what brought me here. It’s the question I was asked time and time again, while waitressing, in response to informing passersby that I was originally from California. It never failed; that shock would cross their face, and their curiosity piqued. Reasonably, I understood. They hadn’t taken the time to experience the beauty of Ely and its full scope. To them, this was just a pit stop on the Loneliest Highway in America. Reflecting, I realize now that they had been asking the wrong question the entire time. It isn’t what brought me here that matters; it’s what keeps me here.
What many people miss as they drive down one of our two main roads, questioning who would dare live here, is the vast array of adventure that Ely offers. From the thrilling snow-capped mountain peaks of Wheeler to the refreshing air among the golden-leafed aspens that surround the lazy road of Success Loop, the venture never ends. Ely is a place that caters to all, offering its locals and visitors the opportunity to be as relaxed or audacious as they desire.
These mountains harbor unique experiences. Like rare geological formations called shields, visible when taking a tour through the Lehman Caves in Great Basin National Park or hidden warm springs scattered throughout their valleys. Featuring mountain bike racing, trail running, or hiking excursions, visitors can join in on several community-hosted events. If endurance doesn’t interest you, come camping in one of the surrounding mountain ranges or enjoy the fun at one of the annual social events. You can sip champagne and take a ride on the historic Nevada Northern Railway Train, viewing the sunset and stars in July, or amp up the energy, cheering at the Horse Races at the local fairgrounds in August.
This tiny town is built on the spirit of community and entrepreneurship, including several eateries built from a dream and crafted for success. From a farm-to-table, locally sourced steak house to authentic Mexican cuisine, after a day of exploring, there is possibly nothing more satisfying than eating a delicious meal in great company.
But don’t be surprised amid your adventure if you also experience the true prize of Ely, its community. In true small-town fashion, drive-in, lift your hand, waving at the first person you see, and as they greet you back without question, remember you’re about to discover the beauty of Ely and the reason I now lovingly call it my home. It’s a place where you’re not just a visitor but a part of the community, a place where you’re welcomed with open arms and a friendly smile.
