Nevada’s most creative winter festival returns on January 17th through 19th! This year will feature the events, tournaments, and excitement that we’ve come to love during Martin Luther King, Jr. Weekend. Events kickoff Friday the 17th with a mural tour taking place at 3:30 p.m. Prepare to be guided through our public art that winds through our downtown. The initial meeting spot has yet to be determined, but never be afraid to call the Bristlecone Convention Center at (775) 289-3720 for location details.
A highlight of the Fire & Ice Winter Festival is the Sculpture Bonfire at the NNRy Rail yard.
Following the mural tour, make sure you’re at the Bristlecone Convention Center itself at 6:00 p.m. for a free all ages concert. Blu Egyptian, “an exhilarating young quartet based in Northern California, who have pioneered the genre Prog-Jam,” will be playing the night away. Of course, the bar will be open and drinks will be available to purchase. What better way to end the first day of Fire and Ice with some live music and a tasty beverage? Did we mention it’s free?
In place of snow sculptures this year, this year’s Fire & Ice will feature a Massive Art Contest! Details on this year’s specifications are currently being decided. White Pine County Tourism and Recreation will make announcements across their social media accounts very soon. Once again, feel free to call them directly at the Bristlecone Convention Center for more details. Just like the snow sculptures of the past, this includes major cash prizes for the best artwork.
YOU MUST REGISTER TO PARTICIPATE! Free to register, just come in or call the Bristlecone Convention Center at (775) 289-3720. Registration closes this Thursday the 16th at 12:00pm. Teams can start decorating their art project at 8:00am on Friday and must be finished by 2:00pm on Sunday for judging! Fire & Ice always showcases how unbelievably creative and hardworking our community is. Can’t wait to see what everyone comes up with this year!
Saturday the 18th is the day of tournaments! The entire community never fails to get involved with Fire and Ice, and this year is no different. It will all begin at 8:00 a.m. sharp with Ely Outdoor Enthusiasts’ Birkebeiner Winterfest. Putting the athletics into our festival, the Birke is a fantastic loop at Ward Mountain Recreation Area.
Darts tournament at the VFW Hall, bowling tournament at Sunset Lanes, pool tournament at The Outpost, and downtown businesses are especially open. The entire list of events can be found at www.ElyNevada.net.
Two train rides will happen on Saturday. The first is at 1:00 p.m. and is Locomotives 93’s 116th Birthday Train! Our traditional and spectacular fireworks off the back of the moving Nevada Northern Railway locomotive will happen once again at 6:00 p.m. Once the train returns to the station, the art sculpture bonfire at the railyard can begin to be burned away when the train returns to the station. This year’s sculpture bonfire is once again being designed and built by the Ely Lions Club. Following the bonfire, head over The Outpost for karaoke!
We will finish Fire and Ice at Broadbent Park on Sunday the 19th. The list of activities on our final day will leave you satisfied and appreciative of the long weekend. This is where we will have axe throwing, cornhole, the horseshoe tournament, and fireworks will be at 5:30 p.m. Right after the fireworks display, you’re invited to a Nighttime Glow Disc Golf Tournament at Ward Recreation Area. This is another event that requires sign-ups in advance, so please call the Convention Center at (775) 289-3720.
You are also invited to 2053 Campton Street in Ely for a Free House Concert Party featuring local band, Beautiful Losers. This intimate (but by no means quiet) event will officially end Fire and Ice. It will be the party of the weekend that you don’t want to miss.
