According to statistics, it is estimated that 10 percent of students will experience educator sexual misconduct by the time they graduate high school. Unfortunately, this occurrence has taken place within the White Pine County School District, but not without repercussions that send a stern message to deviates in the making.
Educator misconduct. To some, that may mean anything but “sexual” inapropriation, especially when it comes to educators who are valued as some of the most respected members of a community. There is no doubt they play critical roles in our children’s lives by educating them, and encouraging their social and emotional growth. But what happens when a select number of educators turn their good works into sexual misconduct?
As our readers may recall, in February 2023, the White Pine County School District submitted a referral to the WPCSO who in turn requested investigative assistance from the Nevada State Police Investigation Division. The allegations: “Possible inappropriate sexual conduct between a WPC School District employee and a student(s).” Detectives requested, and received, an arrest warrant for Ryan Wooldridge on related charges. Wooldridge was arrested for “Luring or Attempting to Lure a Child or Mentally Ill Person, with Use of Computer Technology, to Engage in Sexual Conduct.”
On April 1, 2024 Wooldridge appeared with his appointed public defender for sentencing; WPC District Attorney James Beecher, representing the State, was also present. Per court documents, after hearing from all parties and allowing the defendant to personally address the court, the court adjudged defendant guilty by virtue of guilty plea to the crimes of COUNT 1: CRIME LURING A CHILD UNDER THE AGE OF 16 BY PROVIDING HARMFUL MATERIAL, A CATEGORY C FELONY. Defendant is sentenced to serve a maximum term of 60 months in the Nevada Department of Corrections with parole eligibility after a minimum term of 24 months. It is appropriate for the court to suspend this sentence and place defendant under the supervision of the Nevada Division of Parole and Probation for a period not to exceed 60 months on the standard and special conditions. In a press release dated April 1, 2024 signed by James S. Beecher, ESQ. WPC District Attorney: “This prosecution could not have been possible were it not for the brave victims coming forward, the support of the victims’ families, as well as the WPC School District taking quick action by involving law enforcement. While this was a difficult case, because of the efforts of all involved, we were able to put the defendant on lifetime supervision, requiring sex offender registration, a ban against internet usage, and restitution for the victims’ cost of counseling received before sentencing and for future counseling.
While there are victims who were and are painfully affected by the perpetrator, it is important to recognize that the actions of people and entities at every level allowed the perpetrator to be stopped before any child could be physically assaulted.”
Sexual abuse and exploitation of children is never acceptable. Such behavior is particularly concerning because of the trust that children and their families place in settings from education, church and daycare, overnight stays with friends, and even family members (don’t forget older adolescents molesting children younger than themselves…no child is exempt from such debilitating acts of life altering occurrences. Please be vigilant where children are concerned, and always be on the lookout for signs and symptoms of any type of abuse.
