The much-anticipated White Pine County Fair is back, promising a weekend packed with excitement, tradition, and community spirit. Proudly hosted by Beta Sigma Phi, Agriculture District No. 13, District 4-H, and the White Pine Junior Livestock Show and Sale Committee, this year’s fair is set to be a memorable event for all ages.
The White Pine County Fair and Horse Races hold a storied legacy that intertwines with the resilience and history of the region. Originating in 1934, during the Great Depression, local ranchers and businesspeople united their efforts to create this extraordinary event, offering a ray of hope to the community. Pioneers like Bill Goodman, Frank Calloway, and Stan Draper spearheaded its establishment, bringing together a community determined to thrive despite the challenges of the times. In 1937, the county lent its support by forming a Fair Board, with Tom Bath as its first chairman. The culmination of this collaborative spirit was the construction of a new race track and grandstand, which continues to host the event to this day.
One of the fair’s highlights will be the White Pine Horse Races, taking place from August 16-18. Spectators can look forward to heart-pounding action as horses thunder down the track. Racing post times are scheduled for 3:00 PM on Friday, August 16, and 1:00 PM on both Saturday and Sunday.
Kicking off the fair weekend, the Ely Volunteer Fire Department will be holding their 53rd annual BBQ Dinner at the Fairgrounds starting at 5:00 p.m. on Friday, August 16th. Stick around after a delicious meal for music and dancing.
Adding to the excitement, White Pine Productions presents the Ranch Rodeo on Friday, August 16. This event will showcase authentic cowboy skills with thrilling competitions like Ranch Bronc Riding and Ranch Branding. It’s a chance to witness the rugged determination and skill of ranchers as they compete in a series of challenging and traditional rodeo events.
