In the early hours of August 18th, while the town slept, a fire broke out in the middle of town.
Patrons of the Jailhouse Motel and Casino were startled awake by fire alarms and smoke as the block of rooms behind Mr. G’s were engulfed in flames.

Sasha Horsley – A fi re broke out at the Jailhouse Motel early Friday morning ahead of White Pine County’s busiest weekend.
The Ely Fire Department along with the McGill Fire department were able to fully extinguish the flames within three hours of the call.
Luckily no one was injured in the fire, but the Jailhouse rooms sustained significant damage. Jailhouse posted on their Facebook page that if you had a reservation for one of their rooms during this time, they would no longer be able to accommodate you. With Friday starting one of the biggest event weekends of our county this left people scrambling to find rooms in an already sold-out town.
There is still no official word on what started the fire. The Cell Block and Casino were not affected by the fire and are still functioning normally.
