Breathing radon can cause lung cancer and is the number one cause of lung cancer among people who do not smoke. It is the second leading cause of lung cancer for people who do. Radon is a naturally occurring radioactive gas released in rock, soil and water from the natural decay of uranium. It is colorless, odorless and tasteless. The only way to detect it is to test for it. Most radon exposure happens in homes and 1 in 3 homes tested in White Pine County have an elevated level of radon.
The White Pine County Extension is offering free radon test kits to anyone interested in testing their home for radon. The test takes three days, and it’s as easy as opening a package and placing the test device in a designated area. After sending the test kit to the lab for analysis, you should receive radon results in about two weeks.
Free radon test kits are available at the White Pine County Extension Office through February 29th, 2024. Test kits can be picked up at the Extension Office during regular business hours at 950 Campton Street, Ely. Call 775-293-6599 for information or office hours.
