Joel Brent Munson

Joel Brent Munson was born March 18th, 1960 and passed away unexpectedly at his residence along with his beloved dog, Alphie in Vancouver, Washington on November 16, 2023.

Born to Dick and Diane Munson, Joel grew up in White Pine County with five siblings. He attended McGill Elementary and was a graduate of White Pine High School. He was very active on the debate team and played the French Horn in the school band. He loved music and was an accomplished pianist serving the community at many functions with his talent.

Joel attended Brigham Young University where he graduated in communications. He worked for BYU Radio and broadcasting while attending BYU. After graduation he worked as a journalist and reporter for KSL News. He later returned to Ely and worked for Great Basin College where he served as Director. He was instrumental, along with others, in raising funds that provided the building for the Great Basin College we have today.

The rest of his career would be working at universities: California State, Los Angeles. Nova Southeastern University, Fort Lauderdale, Florida. The University of Oregon, Eugene, Oregon. Southampton University, United Kingdom. University of California, Riverside. De MontFort University, Leicester, United Kingdom. His last job was Senior Vice President at Clark College, Vancouver, Washington where he retired in December, 2022.

Joel had the opportunity to travel and see many wonderful places in the world, Europe being his favorite, especially Spain and Italy. He was able to take his parents on some of those trips to the places he loved to visit.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Diane and brother, Richard.

Joes is survived by his husband Sergio Salamone, his father, Dick Munson, brothers, Mick (Margaret) Munson, Craig (Teresa) Munson, Deland (Suzette) Munson, sister, Erin (David) Costello and sister-in-law, Kristl Munson and many nieces and nephews that were very dear to him.

Joes will be interred at the Ely City Cemetery. At Joel’s request there will be no funeral service. The family thanks all that have reached out with love and support.
