Marie A. Dicianno Carrick was born on January 17, 1938 in Ely, Nevada to Amedeo and Carmela Mendozzi DiCianno. She married Donald R. Carrick in July of 1961. Marie was a registered nurse who dedicated her life to her family and her community.
She graduated with her nursing degree from Holy Cross Hospital in 1959. Marie worked at Saint Mary’s Hospital in Reno, and Steptoe Valley Hospital and White Pine County extended care facility in Ely. In 1974 she began working with Home Health Services of Nevada, serving 38 years as branch manager.
She was very active in her community, serving on various boards and committees, including the Board of Directors of the Little People’s Head Start, Public Education Chairman for the American Cancer Society, Juvenile Probation Board, and the Power Plant Advisory Committee. Marie was a life-long and dedicated member of Sacred Heart Church, a member of Our Lady of the Snows Guild, served with the Ministerial Association and was a member of the BPOE Does.
Marie was the recipient of the Nevada Attorney General’s Silver State Citizen Award for Nurse of the Year in 1991, and was named as one of the ten most honored Rural Health Pioneers for 53 years in nursing in 2013. She was chosen as the Grand Marshall of the Fourth of July Parade in 2005.
Despite the many awards and recognitions she received, Marie was not one who easily accepted accolades. She loved her job with a passion, which was to assist her patients and their families during the end-of-life process, and she accomplished that whether or not she was on the clock. There is not a family in the Ely area that used Home Health Services who does not remember how she gave her time, love, and compassion to their loved ones. She was an essential gift to the people in White Pine County, and her ministry was very much appreciated and inspiring.
Marie’s love of animals was unsurpassed, as she constantly took in stray dogs and cats, that most of the time were not in good health. She nursed them back to health and they became family pets.
Marie passed from this life at her home on August 28, 2023, in Ely, Nevada. She is survived by her three sons: Michael (Tara) of New Milford, New Jersey; Richard (Betsy) of Elko, Nevada; and Timothy (Michelle) of Tucson, Arizona; grandchildren Dylan, Faith, Gavin, Cerise, Teela, Aimee, and Jason; six great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Donald, brothers Richard and Romolo, and her parents.
