Nevada State Police Highway Patrol delivers Real-Time Safety alerts to commercial truck drivers

Nev. – Nevada’s highways are critical transportation corridors for commerce and travel between Canada and Mexico. Recognizing the unique challenges posed by heavy truck traffic, the Nevada State Police Highway Patrol Division has launched a groundbreaking program to enhance safety by delivering real-time alerts directly to commercial truck drivers.

Through a partnership with Drivewyze, the Highway Patrol utilizes the Smart Roadways service to send targeted safety messages to drivers via their Electronic Logging Devices (ELDs). This innovative approach leverages geo-fencing technology to provide timely updates on roadway conditions, improving safety for all motorists.
“Nevada’s diverse terrain and challenging driving conditions, coupled with our position as a major transportation corridor, make initiatives like this essential,” said Nevada Highway Patrol Lieutenant Tappan Cornmesser. “With increased truck traffic and vital interstates running coast-to-coast, these real-time messages will help prevent crashes and improve safety for all drivers.”

Real-Time Alerts: Critical messages, such as weather warnings, chain requirements, and traffic hazards, are displayed in bold, high-visibility formats on drivers’ ELDs.
Winter Preparedness: Targeted notifications for snowstorms, chain controls, and high wind advisories, particularly in areas like Reno, Carson City, and Tahoe, keep drivers informed during harsh conditions.

Event and Construction Management: Advanced warnings for major events and construction projects in the Las Vegas area help reroute truck traffic, reduce congestion, and enhance operational safety.

Safety Advocacy: Alerts include reminders to comply with Nevada’s hands-free laws, buckle up, and report human trafficking activity.

A Regional First in Innovation

Nevada is one of the first states in the western U.S. to implement this technology, joining only a handful of states nationwide. This forward-thinking program positions Nevada as a leader in roadway safety and innovation.
