Poetry Writing Workshop and Contest to be held at the White Pine County Library

The White Pine County Library exists to provide access to information, inspire lifelong learning and foster community engagement by offering a welcoming and inclusive space. One of these missions is to hold a poetry writing workshop.

The workshop will take place in the library conference room on Saturday, April 5th, at 12 PM. The library is located at 950 Campton Street in Downtown Ely in Veteran’s Park.

The workshop is aimed at helping school aged children prepare for the library’s upcoming 10th Annual Children’s Poetry Contest on May 3rd. Any questions about the poetry workshop or poetry contest can be answered by library staff at (775) 293-6900.

All ages are welcome to the workshop but children under the age of eight must be accompanied by an adult.

Plot Twist Publishing from Las Vegas will be presenting.

This year’s Children’s Poetry Contest will be held in conjunction with the Nevada Northern Railway.

In order to enter, children 5-18 must have a photograph taken. This can be done through the library. Entrants, or their parents, can contact the library for a photograph. Children must create an original poem. Pick up a full list of rules at the library front desk. Poems must be submitted to the library with a completed registration form, also available at the front desk, by April 28th.

All poems must be performed by the entrant at the poetry contest on May 3rd at 10:00 AM in the library conference room. Every entrant will also be given a family pass for four in exchange for performing their work on a special train ride at the Nevada Northern Railway May 17 at 1:00 PM. These tickets will only be available to ride on the Poetry Train.

Entrants can be incentivized by writing a poem about the train. Not only is it a historical icon, but quite literally, poetry in motion.
