It’s been a hard road for Chris Garcia and his family these past two weeks. Still they have no real answers regarding his K9 partner, Nala. We, too, contacted The Nevada Department of Public Safety to get answers and received the same generic response many others have.
“The Nevada Department of Public Safety is aware of significant public interest in Nala, one of the department’s working canines. As with all department canines, Nala is a state funded and highly trained member of our law enforcement family. To improve performance and assure renewed certification, the department determined canine Nala needed remedial training and other support, including an up-to-date veterinary examination. These steps will help to ensure a long and healthy law enforcement career serving the citizens of Nevada. Canine Nala’s welfare is a priority for the department, and she remains in good health and good hands. This matter is the subject of an internal administrative review, and the Department is unable to provide any further comment or details at this time.”
But this statement is a little confusing. Speaking to Officer Garcia regarding this answer he has assured us that Nala was up-to-date on her vet exams and did have an upcoming one that was due in February. He also confirmed that she was up-to-date with her certification, with a renewal coming up the end of January that was already scheduled. There was no concern that she would have any issues with the evaluation. Garcia feels the generic statement is misleading and sidestepping the issue.
As a last resort a post was created on Facebook to bring awareness to Nala’s situation. The post on social media has blown up. The first post gaining 1700 shares before it was flagged and taken down by Facebook. He has done countless interviews and over the past weekend the story has gone viral all across the nation. Monday morning the story was front page on Yahoo.
Garcia and Nala were partners for two years, which means for the past two years they worked together almost every day. She went home every night with Garcia and he is the only handler and home she has ever known. Now he can only hope she is being taken care of where ever she may be. So where does that leave Garcia and Nala? Pretty much in limbo still waiting for answers, hoping they come soon.
