Steven Gray, 47, of Ely, Nevada, passed away Sunday, June 25, succumbing to a traumatic brain injury sustained after falling at home in April 2023.
Steve was born in Las Vegas and graduated from Bonanza High School (‘94) and University Nevada Reno (‘98).
Steve loved everything outdoors and was an avid fisherman and hunter. Steve served as a Park Ranger for the State of Nevada at Valley of Fire and a Park Supervisor managing Cave Lake and Ward Charcoal Ovens State Parks.

At Cave Lake, he organized the Fire & Ice Festival and Bathtub Races with his friend Ed Spear as part of “Only in Ely,” a project to promote tourism.
Steve leaves behind countless friends to whom he loved to tell true stories, mostly true stories, and tall tales around the campfire. It is true he rescued a golden eagle once, was bit by a rattlesnake, crushed by an ATV, and fished for sharks off Newport Beach.
He worked tirelessly to make Cave Lake a place where visitors knew there was a friend to help them set up camp, answer questions, and assist in emergencies big and small.
He is survived by his son Evan, parents Gary and Joan, brother Ron, sisters Michelle and Micki, and nieces and nephews.
Memorial Service to be held 11 a.m. Saturday, September 30 at Cave Lake in Ely, Nevada. In lieu of flowers, donations to *Steve GrayCaveLKMemorial on *Spotfund (http://spot.fund/ttzv4sc) are being accepted for renovations to Cave Lake’s Ranger Talk seating area.
