White Pine County – A hiker was recently caught in the central flames of the Broom Canyon Wildfire and miraculously rescued by firefighters earlier today.
At approximately 2:32 p.m., a man apparently backcountry backpacking was saved from the engulfing heat and smoke that has become the Broom Canyon Wildfire.
Per Inciweb.Wildfire.Gov: “The Broom Canyon Fire is burning within the Currant Mountain Wilderness. The lightning-caused fire is located nine miles east of Duckwater or 60 miles southwest of Ely, Nevada.”
Firefighters first spotted the recently rescued individual while performing aerial sweeps of the fire. Recorded conversation between the officials provide insight on the exact moment the hiker was seen.
“Holy crap there’s a dude,” a pilot can be heard saying.
An investigation is underway to determine exactly how a random backpacker could infiltrate an unsafe wildfire area. Currently, officials have literally no idea how he got there.
“We literally have no idea how he got there,” Ely District Ranger Joseph Schmidt said. “We’ve had this area locked down for weeks. Not to mention, why would anyone want to be in the center of a burning wilderness?”
Dispatch reporters had the very same question, which is why they posed it to the now safe hiker.
“Well, I was in Scouts when I was a kid, so I know a thing or two about smoke signals when I see ‘em,” he said. “I don’t quite remember what ‘Giant Plume of Nonstop Hellfire’ means in smoke lingo, but I don’t think it’s anything good. I figured it was a major SOS. If the Titanic could’ve had smoke signals, I bet it would’ve looked exactly like that. But the movie probably couldn’t afford all those special effects. Just like they couldn’t afford an extra plank of floating wood for Leonard DeeCheerio. Anyway, I ran straight into that mamma jamma.”

When asked if his tattered, scorched clothes and soot marks across his face were because of his recent trancing among the blaze, the hiker replied, “No, nothing to do with that. I’m just from Ruth.”
