COMINS LAKE
The fishing overall has improved over the past couple weeks with the warming temperatures and the 9,000 stocked trout that have been added. Although it is clearing up, the water is still murky and a tea-stained color due to the rehydration of the shore vegetation. The water temperature is now hovering above 60 degrees and will increase steadily as the temps are projected to be in the mid to high 80’s as we come into July. Trout fishing has improved (although still slightly slow) as it was recently stocked with 9,000 trout averaging 9”. These will be most harvests, but it is still possible to reel in some of the larger trout on up to 18”. Early morning and evening fishing will prove to be the most productive with the trout population. Bass populations are healthy and have been staging for the past couple of weeks. This should prove to be a good year for bass fishing. There is now an established population of bluegill. Anglers are encouraged to target Pike and dispatch them accordingly (unless they are radio tagged by NDOW- see note below.)
Please note that NDOW has placed radio tags in several Pike. These Pike will have an orange tag near their dorsal fin and a small antenna coming from their stomach. Please return these fish to water. All other Pike must be dispatched if caught.
COLD CREEK RESERVOIR
The reservoir was stocked with 2,000 rainbow trout and 1,500 tiger trout, all averaging 9” about 1 month ago. Fishing has reportedly been active. With the sporadic weather systems passing through bringing unstable barometric pressure, water clarity will vary by the day. Worms and Powerbait are proving successful while a variety of spinners and wooly buggers and nymphs are also effective. There is a small Bass population, and while harvesting is allowed, it is strongly encouraged to practice catch-and-release until the population is well established.
STEPTOE CREEK
The creek is flowing well above normal with an average rate of 32.2 CFS. Wooly Bugger flies and black nymphs have had some success, as well as gold and/or silver spinners.
KIRCH/SUNNYSIDE
Fishing activity has picked up and boat access is still good, although anglers can expect seasonal weed growth to be on its way. Soft plastics have proven to be the most fruitful. Bass is catch-and-release only at Dacey until June 30; there is a 5 Bass limit for Adams McGill, Cold Springs, and Haymeadow until July 1st. Dacey Reservoir has a trout limit of 1 while the others are 5.
ILLIPAH RESERVOIR
The Reservoir is currently more than 90% full. A little over 8,000 fish averaging 9” have been stocked so far this spring. The water temperature is above the 60 degree mark and will continue to increase steadily as the temps are projected to be in the mid to high 80’s as we come into July. Anglers should expect harvests of 8-10” trout on the main lake, with the potential of an occasional Brown. Powerbait and worms should be effective along with gold, silver, and/or white/red spinners. For flies, olive wooly buggers and nymphs have gotten some activity.
CAVE LAKE
The lake is currently closed to fishing and empty. The dam repair is currently underway and tentatively, the expectation is that it will begin to be filled in the late fall to early part of winter.
