COMINS LAKE
Due to the fluctuating and unseasonably warm temperatures in the recent weeks, the ice conditions are changing quickly and often. As of New Year’s Day, the perimeter of the lake was thawed and many areas of the lake did not have fishable ice. With the cold temperatures passing through, this should improve very quickly. For the sake of safety, we recommend that all anglers exercise caution, and that they do their own evaluations of the ice conditions on a day to day basis. There is NO guarantee of ice safety at this time. The lake was recently stocked with around 8,500 trout. Anglers can expect their harvests to range from 8”-10” with the new stock and 16”-24” with the more mature stock that was already in the lake. Anglers are encouraged to target Pike and dispatch them accordingly (unless they are radio tagged by NDOW- see note below.)
*Please note that NDOW has placed radio tags in several Pike. These Pike will have an orange tag near their dorsal fin and a small antenna coming from their stomach. Please return these fish to the water. All other Pike must be dispatched if caught. *
ILLIPAH RESERVOIR
As of the last viable report a few days prior to the New Year, the lake is now iced over with thicknesses hovering around 3.5” to 4”. Due to the fluctuating and unseasonably warm temperatures in the recent weeks, the ice conditions are changing quickly and often. Anglers should exercise caution, as there is a possibility of thinner areas that may be unsafe. With the cold temperatures passing through, conditions should improve very quickly, but it is recommended that anglers evaluate the ice on their own on a day to day basis. The final stock of the year was just done with almost 10,000 trout, averaging between 9”-10” in length. Anglers can also expect to reel in some of the existing trout measuring upwards of 12”-14”.
CAVE LAKE
The lake is currently closed to fishing and empty. The dam repair is currently underway. Current projections are now for 2025.
