White Pine Bobcat Wrestling takes first at state; first time in 27 years

In a truly triumphant moment, the boys’ wrestling team has achieved the pinnacle of success, securing first place at the state tournament in Fallon on February 7 & 8, 2025! This monumental victory marks the first time since 1998, when Coach Joe Sedlacek was a senior, that they have claimed the state championship. Now, under Joe’s inspired leadership, these young athletes have ascended to greatness, completing a truly remarkable full-circle journey.

Although the girls’ points didn’t count towards the state total, their phenomenal accomplishment still helped the White Pine wrestling secure an impressive 2nd place overall against 2A, 3A, and 5A schools. Coach Sedlacek stated “Most parents have no clue what it takes to win a State Title in wrestling, even a 2A State title is a big deal. Furthermore, the girls are “super state” and we had two State placers in the girls, four Champions in the boys. Plus the pinnacle of the sport… a Team State Championship. Be extremely proud of your kids. They did great.” These uplifting words are what inspire these kids to return year after year, and over the last four years the wrestling program has doubled in size each year. The perseverance these wrestlers demonstrated throughout the season truly paved the way for a state title!

In the girls bracket, sophomore Mikayla Garcia showed unyielding resolve that inspired her peers, although she did not place at state. Senior Kylie Knudsen culminated her high school career in resounding fashion, securing an impressive 4th place at State. Senior Gianna Sedlacek displayed unparalleled perseverance, navigating an undefeated season only to face a heart-wrenching loss in the final 10 seconds, yet earning a remarkable second place in the State. Her final high school match was a testament to her shining spirit. The girls showcased extraordinary skill, competing valiantly against girls from their weight bracket but various divisions, meaning, not just their 2A division, and holding their own with remarkable tenacity against opponents from 3A and 5A, a truly awe-inspiring achievement.

The boys made an incredible achievement taking 13 to state, although not all of them placed. Craig Reed’s perseverance paid off as he took State for his first time and proudly stood 4th on the podium. Marshall Miller’s dedication was evident as he took 3rd for his last time in his senior year at State. Freshman Cooper Reed’s remarkable talent earned him second place. Senior Tucker Maestes continued on his path to State champion and ended up just short, but still an impressive runner-up.

Bryant O’Flaherty finished his senior year on a high note as a state champion. Jacob Hall’s relentless progress each year culminated in him becoming a state champion, ending his junior year on a triumphant note. Sophomore Maddox Sedlacek’s outstanding performance led to a champion win at state. Freshman Yvo Guevanna’s impressive debut at state earned him first place, a truly remarkable achievement.

Wrestling is an incredibly individualized sport, yet it’s also profoundly team-oriented. This State championship showcases a remarkable group of individual athletes who draw energy and motivation from one another, pushing each other to reach new heights of wrestling excellence. Returning home to a sea of community supporters eagerly waiting in the parking lot, cheering them on, serves as a poignant reminder of their purpose as athletes. The unwavering mental and physical resilience these athletes demonstrate is truly a testament to their unrelenting dedication, a quality that can only be fully appreciated by fellow wrestlers and wrestling parents. The accomplishments of these exceptional men and women are genuinely awe-inspiring, earning them the highest accolades and recognition.

Although many seniors are leaving us this year, their legacy will leave a lasting impact. We feel grateful to have witnessed their remarkable achievement and aspire to make them proud in the future with continued success from all returning wrestlers and new ones next season
