August 8th concluded the White Pine County Library’s Summer Reading Program. Families enjoyed a book walk. Starting at the main library entrance, patrons read “One Duck Stuck” by Phillis Root. Pages of the oversized book were displayed on a walking path around the courthouse. The book walk ended at the duck pond where children received their own rubber duck and headed to an ice-cream social at Veterans Park. Summer reading sponsors KGHM and Great Basin National Park chatted with families and handed out information along the way. The real fun began afterwards when summer reading prizes were awarded at the library.
This year’s summer reading program theme was “Adventure Begins at Your Library”. It featured nine weeks of events for children of all ages. The program focused on getting families into the library and reading. “Summer Slide” refers to the phenomena where school aged children have significant learning loss over the summer months. Studies have shown that one of the most effective ways to prevent this is with daily reading. The library aimed to help by offering fun activities, reading logs, and incentives. This year the library saw record numbers of children and their families. In addition to five story hour programs and 11 & Up Club every week, the library also hosted eight other events over the summer. From puppets to storytelling and science workshops to wildlife conservation presentations with live raptors, the library has seen a very busy summer.
A huge part of the success of the summer reading program this year is attributed to the incentive program. Children earned tickets for attending story hour and reading. Tickets could be entered into raffles for nearly thirty different prizes. A large portion of the prizes were provided by the program’s main sponsor, KGHM Robinson. Other sponsors included KDSS, Great Basin National Park, CAL Ranch, White Pine Aquatic Center, Nevada Northern Railway. Shellraiser, Bath Lumber, The White Pine County Museum, St. George Dinosaur Discovery, Cowabunga Bay, Tracy Aviary, Northeastern Nevada Museum, Thanksgiving Point, Penworthy, and Utah’s Hogle Zoo.
Thrilled with the outpouring of support from both patrons and the community, the library welcomes everyone to participate in the programs scheduled for the 2024-2025 school year.

The library is also excited to add All Abilities Club to the mix. This special club invites friends of all ages and abilities to come together to socialize and enjoy a craft. Future sessions of All Abilities Club will be scheduled at 12-1 PM on the first Thursday of every month beginning in September.
