Hayes Store
Good evening and welcome to White Pine: Then & Now!
In this weeks edition, we see the Hayes General Merchandise store in September 1906 and the same location in August 2024. The store was part of a larger complex of businesses in this block which included a hotel. It appears from a sign on the building that the complex was known as Hayes Park. I don’t know much else about the store and internet searches have yielded nothing.
In the current photo, everything in the 1906 photo is gone with no information on when it was removed. The store was replaced by the brick building, which was once the rectory for the Catholic church (out of frame to the right) and was built in 1939. In 2006, the Church constructed a new building in East Ely and the rectory was sold into private ownership in about 2013 to Battleborn Media, who made it the office for the Ely Times newspaper. The Ely Times recently announced that they were discontinuing the printing of the paper and have since put the building up for sale once again. The only reminder of what once was is Hayes Street on the north end of the block.
