Welcome to another installment of White Pine: Then & Now!
In this week’s edition, we are down on 5th Street in downtown Ely looking south. In the original photo, taken on August 30, 1913, we see the streets are flooded during heavy rain with several townsfolk on the sidewalks. The two homes behind the gentleman in the hat and coat are on Campton Street and the home behind them is on Rose Street, which to this day is nothing more than a fancy alley. There is a second home partially visible on Rose Street behind the buildings on the right of the photo.
In the current photo, shot on January 19, 2025, about the only thing that hasn’t changed completely are the two homes on Campton and the homes behind them on Rose Street. The two Campton homes have been significantly modified, but I believe they are the original buildings. The visible Rose Street home was built in 1908 and appears that it hasn’t seen any significant changes in the years since, and the home that was just barely visible on that street, built in 1906, is also relatively unchanged on the exterior. The building on the extreme right, which was separated from the Richmar Apartments (on the corner of 5th and Campton) by an alley, was ultimately replaced by the post office, which was built in 1937 The homes on the left have all been replaced, except one. The home with the large front porch near the center of the original photo was constructed in 1912, but appears to have been heavily rebuilt and remodeled. From the alley next to that home towards the foreground of the photo, the homes were all demolished and the parking lot for the Hotel Nevada now occupies those lots. Clark Street runs east-west across the front of both photos.
