White Pine County: Then and Now

Welcome to another installment of White Pine: Then & Now!

1129 Mill Street: 1934 – 2025

In this week’s edition we are in Murry Canyon on Mill Street, looking south from near 4th Avenue around 1934. The subject of the photo is the wrecked Dodge parked in front of the home, but this image still provides a nice contrast to the modern day view of the same location. Mill Street looks to have been graded, but has yet to be paved. The top of the distant hill was essentially the end of town at this early date. Just visible behind the near rise in the street, there is another car parked. An interesting detail is the fact that there are power lines down both sides of the street.

91 years later, the scene has changed significantly, with the biggest changes being the street having been paved and the power lines being moved to the alleys behind the homes on each side of the street. The home to the right of the car in the 1934 photo has been added onto, but the original roof line is still visible which allowed me to identify the location. In the years since the original photo was taken, there have been a number of homes constructed south of the far rise in the road as well as a number of newer trees obscuring the distant mountains.
