US 93 Overpass – 1990-2024
Welcome to this week’s edition of White Pine: Then & Now!
In this edition, we take a look at the old US 93 overpass that carried the highway over the Nevada Northern Railway on the north end of town. The overpass was built in 1939 during a highway improvement project to relocate the former Lincoln Highway, once the main drag through East Ely, three blocks to the south from Avenue C to Avenue F. In January 1990, a project was approved by Nevada Department of Transportation to remove the overpass which had been in service for a little over 50 years. I don’t remember what month the project actually started, but during the demolition, traffic was temporarily rerouted back to Avenue C, which becomes Golf Course Road north of the railroad crossing.
In the current view, taken April 18, 2024, it has been 34 years since the overpass was removed and the area has grown some, but not much. As can be seen, a rather large fence now dominates the right side of the scene and barely visible on the left, there is a truck stop under construction. While not seen in these photos, the railroad was reduced from two tracks to one between the highway and Avenue C during the project as well.
