Welcome to another installment of White Pine: Then & Now!
In this week’s edition we are at East Ely in the Nevada Northern Railway yard where the mainline comes into the ore yard, circa mid-1940’s. The train, led by Kennecott Copper Corporation #93, is crossing over to bypass the ore yard likely heading straight to McGill with the loaded ore cars. There are a series of company houses, most likely the railroad’s East Ely section houses, off to the left of the train and two automobiles parked in the open space. The track in the foreground leads off to the ash pit and the enginehouse while the next track back leads off to the coaling tower.
Fast forward 80 years and the company houses are gone, but all the tracks still remain. Locomotive 93 still runs along these tracks pulling excursion trains now instead of ore trains. The area where the cars are parked is now overgrown with sagebrush and littered with miscellaneous railroad items like the rusted out spike barrel in the left foreground.
