In this weeks edition, we are looking along Clark Street at the intersection with Murry Street in downtown Ely. In the original photo, we see construction crews building the Nevada Northern Railway mainline in 1906. Aside from the railroad construction, we also see the Northern Hotel which was still a few months from opening.
In the current photo, taken July 28, 2024, we can see that the tracks and the Northern are both gone. The railroad was removed around 1938 and the Northern burned down in May 1964. The tall brick building just visible to the left of the mural wall is the former Ely Theatre. The fenced in property on the left of the original photo became a series of businesses, the most recent of which was an attorney’s office, though now is currently vacant.
