White Pine first responders hold mock mass casualty drill

In November, White Pine held a Mass Casualty Incident (MCI). The mock event, held at the White Pine High School, involved multiple emergency agencies and student volunteers. The Exercise started with a 911 phone call of an explosion in the science room and reported multiple casualties. From there first responders responded, assessed the area and worked together to triage victims. In total 5 sheriff’s office employees,18 student volunteers and 32 volunteers from the city and county were involved.

The MCI was headed by April Bath, who has attended multiple seminars and workshops for MCI’s. The purpose of an MCI is to offer hands on training in a simulated situation and practice coordination with emergency services. Bath stated that they do an MCI once a year, “It’s important to practice, to a small area like ours, a Mass Casualty Incident is six to eight patients”. She also wants to thank all departments involved in the MCI, including the school district for allowing them to use the school.
