The Spring rodeo season is off and running. The Pahrump Jr/High School Rodeo was held on February 14th through the 16th in Pahrump, Nevada and the Las Vegas Jr/High School Rodeo was held February 28th through March 2nd in Las Vegas, Nevada. It’s always a welcome trip south to warmer weather this time of year for the rodeo club. The winter break can be taxing to get through for these athletes, but they always show up with excellence on their mind and determination to achieve their goals.

Cameron Ashworth attended the Las Vegas rodeo. She had a well navigated pole bending run first go, placing 13th. The second go ended in a penalty for a tipped pole, placing her 24th in the go and 22nd in the average. In the barrel racing, she took a barrel down, gaining a penalty and placing 36th in the go. Second go, she cleaned it all up and ran a smooth pattern for 25th in the go and 33rd in the average.
Sawyer Bliss attended both Pahrump and Las Vegas. He had a tough time getting his calves caught in Pahrump in the tie down roping, taking a no time both gos. His team roping, on the other hand, was top notch, catching and turning both go steers quickly, placing 11th first go, 6th second go and 7th in the average. In Las Vegas, he caught and tied both tie down calves, placing 11th first go and 9th second go, for 7th in the average. In the Vegas team roping, he caught and turned their first go steer, but they couldn’t get the heel loop to fit and took a no time. Second go, they made a smooth run, but took a penalty for a leg, placing 8th in the go and 9th in the average.
Charlie Mangum started her spring season in Las Vegas. She had some tough luck in the barrel racing first go, but came back second go with a complete pattern and a qualified time, placing 36th in the go and 41st in the average.
Heston Rimington also began his spring rodeo season in Las Vegas, but it wasn’t what he had hoped for. He roped with a draw partner in the team roping and was not able take his heel shot either go, scoring a no time in both gos. He made a great effort in the bull riding as well, but was not able to make the eight seconds to the buzzer to receive a score for the ride in either go.
Brooklynn Sena was also in attendance in both Pahrump and Las Vegas. In Pahrump, she had some trouble in the pole bending, taking a couple penalties in both gos for 22nd first go, 22nd second go and 22nd in the average. Her goat tying was fast and smooth. She placed 7th first go, 5th second go and 6th in the average. Breakaway first go was a bit rusty, scoring a no time, but she came back strong second go, placing, 5th in the go and 7th in the average. Her high point placing for the weekend was definitely in the barrel racing. She cruised a nice, smooth pattern first go placing 6th, second go she added a bit of heat and placed 3rd for 3rd in the average. In Las Vegas, she continued her strong roll. She won the pole bending first go, placed 3rd in the second go, winning the pole bending average. She had a strong showing first go in the barrel racing as well, placing 2nd. Second go was a little tougher, gaining a penalty for a down barrel, placing 32nd in the go and putting them a long 23rd in the average. The breakaway calves were speedy and were able to resist being caught both goes for no placing. First go in the goat tying, she had a solid run, placing 8th, but the second go goat resisted being tied and she received a no time, for 14th in the average.
In the Junior High Division, both Higbee boys made their marks in the light rifle shoot in Pahrump. Ernest shot for 3rd overall and Samuel was 7th. Both boys have stepped up their game and it’s exciting to see their skills advance.
