The White Pine Jr/High School Rodeo team attended the Fernley High School Rodeo March 15th through 17th. The weather was fortunately beautiful, which is not the norm for this rodeo, historically speaking. The team navigated some highs and lows, some personal best times and some no times, but they handled the good and the bad with grace and character which is something we are always proud of them for.
The high school team is beginning to settle into their groove. Lainey Barney made a safe, smooth run in the barrel racing first go for 17th place. She ran her second go run with much more passion and assertion, but unfortunately took a barrel down in the process, placing 40th for 28th in the average. She had a tough time getting either of her breakaway loops to fit into a legal catch and received no times in both gos. She and her team roping partner, Jessica Young, worked intelligently and quickly in the team roping, getting both ends caught in the first go for 18th place, but received a no time in the second go, for 24th in the average.
Heston Rimington climbed aboard two bulls and did his best to beat the clock, but unfortunately didn’t make the eight second whistle either go.
Travis Rimington also fell short of achieving his full ride on either of his bulls, to gain a qualified ride. We know that both our bull riders will take advantage of the spring weather and get some good practice in before the next event.
Brooklynn Sena made a smoking goat tying run first go, achieving a personal best time of 8.79 for 3rd place. She had a solid run on the second go as well, but the competition was salty and she placed 15th for 9th in the average. She took a run at the pole bending this rodeo, tipping a pole first go, placing 20th. A clean run second go placed her 12th, for 15th in the average. She and her team roping partner, Rylie, took their first go steer down, placing 19th, they couldn’t get the second go steer wrangled and placed 25th in the average. Her breakaway calves were determined not to be caught, leaving her with a no time in both gos. She had smooth and calculated barrel runs both gos, placing 8th first go, and with more assertive jockeying second go, she placed 6th for 6th in the average.
Jessica Young went from heeler to header in the team roping and was able to get the first go steer roped with Lainey for 18th. They couldn’t get the second go steer caught, but still placed 24th in the average. She didn’t get her first go breakaway calf roped, but they roped the second go calf for 20th in the go and 26th in the average. Her first go barrel racing run wasn’t as smooth as she’d hoped, placing 22nd and her second go run really left her wanting a mulligan, receiving a no time, for 45th in the average. We can’t wait to see her sync up with her barrel horse. They will be amazing.
The junior high team was small, but mighty. Sawyer Bliss and his team roping partner, Henry, made a quick run first go for 1st place. They had stiffer competition second go, but still got it roped quickly, placing 3rd and winning the average buckle. Hitting the target proved to be the most difficult first go in the breakaway roping, but he got the second go calf roped, placing 8th for 9th in the average. The ribbon ropers were fast and measured both goes, but Sawyer and Taylor were in the thick of it, placing 4th first go and 3rd second go for 4th in the average. Goat tying competition was stout as well. Sawyer placed 6th first go and a strong kicking goat resisted being tied second go, scoring a no time, placing him 8th in the average.
Kiala Reynolds stood solid against some gritty runs in the barrel racing and holding her second place state standing, placing 2nd first go and 5th second go, for 3rd in the average. Her pole bending run first go was smooth and competitive, placing 6th, but her second go run ended in a downed pole for a penalty and 16th in the go, 11th in the average. An elusive first go breakaway calf gave her a no time, but she caught the second go calf placing 10th in the round and 12th in the average.
With the days becoming longer and the weather turning to spring, we know this team will be taking advantage and getting the much needed time in practicing their craft. White Pine heads to Washoe on March 29th for their next rodeo. We wish them the best of luck and thank them for always representing our county so well in their travels.
