The Nevada Jr/High School Rodeo season held its first spring rodeo for the ‘23-’24 season in Pahrump, Nevada, February 16-18. The early spring rodeos are often in conflict with other school activities and are difficult to prepare for in the inclement weather we can experience in the northern portions of the state, but the White Pine team had several members who entered up and did what they could to prepare themselves
The high school team was well represented by Hannah Benjamin in both the trap shoot and rifle. Hannah placed 3rd in trap, scoring 20 points and 6th in rifle with a score of 277. Brooklynn Sena struggled to put any point on the board in breakaway, goat tying or team roping, but her runs were of good technical quality and show her potential. She was able to make two solid and smooth runs in the barrel racing, placing 9th first go and 6th second go for 7th in the average.

He continued a good pace into the second go, placing 7th in team roping for 4th in the average, 2nd in the breakaway for 2nd in the average, 10th in goat tying for 6th in the average and 3rd in the ribbon roping for 1st place in the average, winning the buckle. Ernest Higbee left his goat tying horse home, but still came out to compete in the rifle shoot. Ernest was able to shoot well enough for 6th place overall with a score of 188. Lia Lawson had to knock the cobwebs off on her first run in the barrel racing, receiving a no time, but had a smooth run in pole bending for 14th place.
Second go came together quicker and more consistent, placing 15th in the go and 19th in the average in barrels and 14th in pole bending for 15th in the average. Asher Perkins climbed aboard some rank stock first go and couldn’t quite make the eight second whistle in the bull riding. His rough dismount in the first go lead to his decision to draw out of the second go. We are hoping for a speedy recovery so he can get back at it. Kiala Reynolds kept her steady roll going in the barrel racing, finishing 6th place first go, 8th place second go, for 5th in the average, holding her overall placing in the state. First go pole bending was in the points, placing 9th, but the breakaway calf got the better of her, receiving a no time. Second go left her with a penalty in the pole bending, placing16th in the go and 14th in the average, but she had a catch in the breakaway, placing 2nd in the go and 5th in the average.
The team goes back to back, as they head to Las Vegas this upcoming weekend. We anticipate a more complete team to arrive there, eager and ready to represent White Pine to the best of their ability. Good luck in Las Vegas, White Pine!
