White Pine Track and Field logs more PRs in latest meet

As the season progresses, the White Pine High School track and field team continued to see success in their latest meet.

On April 18, White Pine traveled to Arbor View High School for the Southern Nevada Coaches Association Open.

It marked another opportunity for White Pine to face competition higher than their 2A level opposition and go after those personal records.

After sophomore Jesta Jackson won the 100m of the Eureka Invitational two weeks ago at 13.89 seconds, she broke that mark this week at Arbor View. She ran her 100 meters in 13.83 seconds for a personal record.

In the same event, juniors Paityn Lawrence and Chelsie Newman broke personal records with 14.16 and 15.31 seconds, respectively.

In the boys’ 100m race, senior McCaul Nicholes recorded his best mark of the season, at 11.82 seconds.

Lawrence, Jackson and junior Keziah Nicholes set PRs in the 200m at 29.80, 30.13 and 30.68 seconds, respectively.

Junior Noah James was White Pine’s fastest athlete in the boys 200m race at 25.17 seconds. In addition, sophomores Ryder Loveless and JayVis Boldon set PRs in the 200m at 26.27 and 28.37 seconds, respectively.

In the 100m hurdles, senior Anna Cappai set a personal record. After lowering her time in each of the previous five events, including finishing the last three between 21.54 and 21.14 seconds, Cappai broke 21 seconds this time, finishing at 20.76 seconds.

Cappai also beat her PR in the 300m hurdles, shaving off three seconds in her first time competing in this event in nearly a month since the Ken Jensen Invitational.
Cappai broke one more personal record. After trying the triple jump for the first time two weeks ago at the Eureka Invitational – where she won the event at 30 feet, 0.5 inches – she surpassed that this past week, leaping 30 feet, 2.25 inches.

Also in the triple jump, sophomore Siena Scott hit a PR at 26 feet, 3.5 inches.

In the girls 3200m race, sophomore Julianne Hughes and junior Jalee Williams set personal records, completing it in 14:45.47 and 15:22.88 minutes, respectively.
On the boys’ side of the 3200m, three Bobcats hit PRs in freshmen Ethan Moskoff and Hunter Hall as well as sophomore Kaleb Nielson, finishing with 13:22.18, 14:46.70 and 17:06.01 minutes, respectively.

Junior Miley Oxborrow set a PR in the shot put event. She threw the four-kilogram ball 27 feet, 10 inches, which was also good for third place. Williams also set a PR in the shot put event, reaching 21 feet, nine inches.

In the girls’ discus event, White Pine had two in the top six. Senior McKenzie Rajala placed third, throwing the disc 93 feet, 8 inches. Oxborrow placed sixth, reaching 83 feet.

In the long jump, White Pine’s four participants finished right around each other with one PR. Lawrence led the way at 13 feet, six inches. Jackson following at 13 feet, 1.5 inches. Junior Amaia Shedd registered a personal record at 13 feet. 0.25 inches. Junior Kirra Richardson reached 12 feet.

Keziah Nicholes placed third in the high jump, reaching four feet, eight inches, which was also two inches behind the leaders.

That success is something head coach Jose Martinez hopes to continue to see as White Pine hosts its track and field meet, the Bobcat Invitational, this week on April 25. Field events begin at 10:30 a.m. followed by running events beginning at 11 a.m.
