Edmund Charles Shurtleff, our beloved father, brother, uncle, grandfather, and great grandfather passed away March 8, 2024, at the age of 85, surrounded by his family.
Edmund was born on March 26, 1938, to Margaret Lillian and Edmund Lee Shurtleff
Edmund lived a long, fulfilled, legendary life. He selflessly served his country, joining the Airforce at 17. After 8 years of service, he followed in his father’s footsteps and began a long illustrious career in the railroad industry. Besides his wife and family, railroading was his passion. He started out as machinist with the DRGW and throughout his career, he wore many hats from Machinist, Engine House Foreman, Train Master for several different railroads. After retirement, he volunteered at Nevada Northern, doing what he loved, working on locomotives!
Edmund married Carolyn in September 1966 and together they raised an amazing family. Family was everything to them. He coached all his sons in Little League baseball over the span of 18 years. He taught his family the meaning of love; he showed us what it meant to work hard, stand up for others and for what we believed in. His wisdom lives in each one of us, and we will continue to pass his wisdom down as he continues to guide us as our guardian angel.
Edmund is survived by his children, sons Scott Mountjoy (Tracy), Kevin Shurtleff (Tammy), Danny Shurtleff, Eddie Shurtleff (Lindy), Robert Shurtleff, Ricky Shurtleff, Randy Shurtleff (Tara), Jeff Shurtleff (Lisa), daughter Deborah Shurtleff Timmons; brothers Don, Ron, George, and sister Alice; twenty-two grandchildren, thirty-nine great-grandchildren, two great-great-grandchildren, several nieces, and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his loving wife Carolyn Shurtleff, parents Margaret Lillian and Edmund Lee Shurtleff, brothers Harold, Clyde, Lee and sister Edith, son Thomas Shurtleff and great-grandson Tanner Shurtleff.
Services will be held Monday, March 25, 2024 with a visitation at 10:00 AM and services at 11:00 AM at Mountain Vista Chapel, Ely, Nevada. Interment at the Ely City Cemetery to follow.
