White Pine High School Wrestling put everything on the mat for this year; Bobcats capture first place win since 2013

White Pine High School wrestling put everything out on the mat for this year’s regionals tournament and it wasn’t a disappointment. The Bobcats walked away with their first regional 1st place win since 2013, with 13 boys qualifying for State. The Ladycats took 5th place in their regional win and stamped three tickets for state.

This year we had a record number of athletes on the wrestling team with 43 athletes. The Ladycats took 12 girls to regionals January 24-25th. Junior Brooklynn Reed came back after a devastating accident early in the season at a tournament in Enterprise, Utah where her elbow was dislocated. With perseverance and dedication, she came back and was able to place 5th at regionals in the 100 bracket and an alternate for a possibility of wrestling at State. Sophomore, Constance Gubler took her first year of wrestling with great stride and placed 6th at regionals in the 100 bracket. Senior Kylie Knudsen took 3rd at regionals, stunning her to state in the 115 bracket. Livy Weiland came in strong as a freshman this year and took 6th place in the 125 bracket. Sophomore, Julianne Hughes took 6th place for the 130 bracket. Senior Anne Wheable finished out her high school wrestling career with a 5th place regional win and as an alternate for state in the 135 bracket. Grayce Sommervold and Olivia Moskoff unfortunately didn’t place in the 140 bracket and Cadence Johnson didn’t place in the 145 bracket. Senior Gianna Sedlacek took her 4th time 1st place regional win in the 145 bracket, while also completing 100 wins across her wrestling season. Aubree Somerall took 6th place in the 155 bracket. Sophomore Mikayla Garcia, in her second year of wrestling took second in her regional tournament. We can’t wait to see what these girls do at State this year!

Regionals for the Bobcats was Saturday, February 1, in Las Vegas, NV. Freshman Yvo Guerra took first place in the 106 bracket scoring 20.00 team points. Freshman Cooper Reed came out strong in the 120 bracket taking 2nd place scoring 18.00 team points. Freshman Theron Hernandez took 3rd place scoring 15 team points. Sophomore Landon Neilson is returning to State after taking 3rd his freshman year in the 113 bracket. He is currently placed 4th in the 126 bracket and scored 11.00 team points. He was the alternate wrestler for 126 so his points didn’t go towards the team total. Senior Jackson Armstrong is returning to State for the 4th time after taking 3rd place at regionals for the 132 bracket scoring 18 points for the team total. Junior Matt Ellis took regionals at 5th place but scored 7.0 points for the team total. He just barely missed the cut off but is an alternate possibility for State. Senior Tucker Maestes took first at regionals in the 144 bracket scoring 23.0 points while also hitting his mark of 100 wins during his high school career. Freshman Talviano Sifre came into regionals hot and took a 5th place standing. Sifre scored 10 points which didn’t go to the team total as he was an alternate for the 144 bracket. He is an alternate possibility for State. Senior Ben Rhoades took 3rd at the 150 bracket scoring 16.5 points. Freshman Brysin Gubler wrestled his heart out and came up a little short in his stacked bracket of 156 and didn’t place. Junior Craig Reed joined the wrestling team this year and took 2nd place scoring 20 points for his team. Sophomore Maddox Sedlacek is returning to state for the second time while taking first for regionals and scoring 24 points for the team in the 175 bracket. Junior Jacob Hall is returning to state for the 3rd time and took Regionals by storm, placing 1st in the 190 bracket and scoring 24 team points. Marshall Miller took 3rd place in the 215 bracket even though his 17.0 points don’t go towards the team score as the bracket alternate he is able to go to State as the 3rd seed. Bryant O’Flaherty returns to State for the 4th time as he takes 1st in the 215 bracket scoring 26.0 points. Lastly for the 285 bracket junior Jordan Stroud comes a little shy of a guaranteed ticket to State by placing 5th, scoring 11.00 for the team. He is an alternate possibility for State.

Regionals combined score was 207 with the next school being 174. That is 34 points away from beating White Pine. Help us in congratulating these 16 members of the White Pine wrestling team for the determination in getting to state. We can’t wait to see what State will look like! We are hoping you all take first at state for the team as well!
